Functional Fitness and Autism Spectrum Disorder

What is Functional Fitness? Functional fitness is comprised of exercise that allows one to be prepared for the activities of daily life. It means to have the strength and mobility to live independently. Do you ever have to get up off a chair? Do you have to pick up things off the ground? Do you have to carry things? These are activities that the general population takes for granted. Unfortunately, there are many on the Autism Spectrum for whom these activities are difficult.

People with Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, have physical challenges that include a weak core, compromised gait pattern, lack of hip flexibility, lack of body awareness in space, little or no trunk stability, and difficulties with other “big,” multi-joint movements. Because many with ASD do not move well, they often lead sedentary lives leading to health issues such as low back pain, diabetes, obesity, etc. Simple daily activities become hard. On top of all this, people with ASD often do not communicate well so they suffer in silence with no help in sight.

The good news is with a proper fitness program we can improve how a person with ASD moves and increase strength. Autism Fitness® is that program. We can help people with ASD move more efficiently and enjoy being more active. This leads to a more comfortable, independent lifestyle.

Doesn’t everyone deserve that?
