Tips for Staying Healthy While Traveling

Let's face it, as much as we might love traveling, nothing throws a monkey wrench into our fitness routines like travel. But with a little thought and preparation, it is possible to stay on track with your health goals no matter how often you travel. Here are three tips to keep you healthy during traveling.

1) LOOK FOR WAYS TO MOVE

Whether you travel by car, train, or plane, there will be plenty of sitting. Nothing sets us back in our fitness goals like too much sedentary time. It doesn't take a lot of movement to keep the effects of sitting at bay. When traveling by car, look for rest stops with walking paths instead of gas stations. Rest stops allow you to take a short walk around and get some fresh air. When traveling by plane, you can spend your airport layovers walking instead of sitting, or you can even walk up and down the aisle on the plane every 20 minutes to get your blood flowing.

2) SNEAK IN SHORT WORKOUTS

When traveling your schedule may be full, but you can still do some exercise. The key here is to remember that doing a little bit of something is a whole lot better than doing nothing at all. Try doing short bursts of intense exercise with mini breaks in between. This high intensity or Tabata style of working out doesn't require equipment and can help you fit in your workout in as little as 10 minutes. To help unwind and stay focused, try a short yoga routine before bed. Again, even just 10 minutes can help you stay fitness-focused and relax your mind before bed.

3) STAY HYDRATED

You may not be able to take water on the plane, but you can still pack your water bottle. Just bringing it along will remind you to stay hydrated. Aim to fill it up three times throughout the day, and you'll be hydrated and energized for all your traveling fun. It's also a good idea to take a few packets of electrolytes with you. This will help balance your hydration to optimal levels. When eating out, choose water instead of soda or sweet tea. Not only will it keep you hydrated, but you'll consume less empty calories.

These tips will keep you thinking about your fitness goals and feeling great too!
